Page rank - Again Google !

I was strangely looking at a tool which claimed it could say how important your site - page is and stuff like that. I was kind of attracted to see how my blog site fared and it's ranking. Well let's not go there. It was heart breaking anyway. LOL

But what prompted me was to figure out how someone could randomly decide what each site was worth and if so the due. The inquisitive feeling got better of my and I visited my ever so trusting Wikipedia to find a solution.

Soon I landed there to find what the term "Page Rank" meant, I was in for some serious surprise. The complexity with which the page rank is computed is mind blowing. Visit the link above and try to traverse the picture on "How Page Rank Works"

Mind blowing arithmetic - perhaps it is so because Google is very protective about it's technology that it would not allow anyone know about the "How it works".

If you are tech savvy and want to know what they are please do check the following links on Page Rank algorithms at your leisure.

I am flummoxed and bemused everytime I see some thing as obscure as this be and yet it just satisfies me that there are so many great scientific inventions and technology never ceases to amaze me. We should be so very grateful to these great minds at work who make our life easy in moving from a limb to another in the big massive dino called Internet.

Fantastic ain't it?

Google hoaxes

I don't know why I am so inclined to Google and everything that goes with it - the success, the failure, the blemish, the errors, the hoax. I don't know. But I like Google. This time around I am going to recollect every bit of the hoaxes that had circulated on behalf of Google. I feel for the darn hoaxes twice so far - once in 2002 and the latest in 2007.

Come to think about it, there have been so wonderfully worded and marketed news about newer products that Google was fishing out and every time this happened and I got to know either by word of mouth or by an internet article, I would be dying to know more and if possible use that.

What happened in 2002 and 2007 were just unbelievable though very well marketed. Let's do a peek a boo at all the hoaxes that have come a long way and why and how I fell for the darn ones. The reason why it is very very misleading is because Google Inc, markets genuine products too during April Fool's day !

So lets date back a while on the April Fool's day in 2000, Google announced one of it's audacious expansion plan. This time it is not the internet, but it was through reading the readers mind. The tool Google MentalPlex was nothing short of expectation. The "MentalPlex" search technology meant that it supposedly read the user's mind to determine what the user wanted to search for, thus eliminating the step of actually typing in the search query. Further, the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) was full of it. It was a good set up for the users to fall in and I did not fall for it (Perhaps I was not much of an Internet savvy guy then) Who knows? Fact is I was not mis-led (proud!). Again, this is just a small example to show how much the computer sciences and factual jargons mis lead even the most educated one. For instance, read what this search engine was proposing to do, though ridiculous and tell me if you did not fall for it.

That was the end of 2000, and in 2002 April Fool's day, Google reveals the technology behind its Page Rank System — PigeonRank. I fell for it ! Though it looked lame yet I fell for it because it the reason that Google came up with. Google touts the benefits of this cost-effective and efficient means of ranking pages and reassures readers that there is no animal cruelty involved in the process. However now, when I read this the article makes many humorous references and puns based on computer terminology and how Google PageRank really works.

Then 2 years later in 2004, Google outfoxed everyone ONCE again. This time it was the Google Lunar/Copernicus Center. This was about a fictitious job opportunities for a research center on the moon. Luna/X (a pun to Linux as well as a reference to the Windows XP visual style and Mac OS X) is the name of a new operating system they claimed to have created for working at the research center. LOL ! Too funny.

Soon after this gimmick, in 2005, it was time for Google Gulp - A Google Drink ! According to the company, this beverage would optimize one's use of the Google search engine by increasing the drinker's intelligence. It was claimed this boost was achieved through real-time analysis of the user's DNA and carefully tailored adjustments to neurotransmitters in the brain (a patented technology termed Auto-Drink). The drink was said to come in "4 great flavors": Glutamate Grape (glutamic acid), Sugar-Free Radical (free radicals), Beta Carroty (beta carotene), and Sero-Tonic Water (serotonin).

This hoax was likely intended as a parody of Google's invite-only email service called Gmail. Although ostensibly free, the company claimed the beverage could only be obtained by returning the cap of a Google Gulp bottle to a local grocery store: a causal loop. There was a Google Gulp FAQ as well for this !

This was a bigot or rather a funny sequence of events that Google managed to showcase year after year on the April Fool's Day. In 2006, it was Google Romance, this time it took time to take a dig at the online dating sites - more to www.match.com and few others who were pounding their drums at the helm claiming the match people based on 48 compatibilities ! Smart folks in Google is all I can say. It even claimed "Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance." It pretends to offer a "Soulmate Search" to send users on a "Contextual Date".

Finally for the year 2007, the real highlight, to which most of us fell for. It was the TISP. Google Toilet Internet Service Provider ! The way they marketed the product was unbelievable. This became the talk of the town for a little while at work, in the malls, among our friends in the US. This was a hoax nonetheless. But still. This is what they had to say about their product: This service would make use of a standard toilet and sewage lines to provide free Internet connectivity at a speed of 8 Mbit/s (2 Mbit/s Upload) (or up to 32 Mbit/s with a paid plan). A user drops a weighted end of a long, Google-supplied fiber-optic cable in their toilet and flushes it. Around 60 minutes later, the end would be recovered and connected to the Internet by a "Plumbing Hardware Dispatcher (PHD)." The user then connects their end to a Google-supplied wireless router and run the Google-supplied installation media on a Windows XP or Vista computer ("Mac and Linux support coming soon"). Cannot believe I fell for this !!

Also, in the same year, the most funniest thing of them all : Gmail Paper hoax was published across most of the Google sites. The crux of the issue was it was a service offered to allow users of Google's free webmail service to add e-mails to a "Paper Archive," which Google would print (on "96% post-consumer organic soybean sputum") and mail via traditional post. A pictorial representation of how it works !

Oh yea come to think about Google Moon too. This was the Lunar Landing sites with Google taking aim at NASA now to make fun of them coz they have had a very bad few seasons at work. Then there was Google Maps and Google Ride Finder (View taxi or shuttle locations in one of the following cities)

All this happened through the last 6-7 years and how vulnerable we are to complex jargons is all I could think of. But I still think it was a great marketing gimmick and the audacity and funny that a Corporation wants to take a dig at everyone around. A mockery at this point of time just continues to amaze me that Google still has not lost the funny bone ! also, at the same time, Google has ensured that it has a response for everything and anything that is available in the internet. Soon it is going to present itself as a major competition to Microsoft office kits.
Fantastic!

It was at the same time around that many more great inventions were made to help make our life more easier.

Wikipedia Mash up

I stumbled upon a rather interesting logo definition for Wikipedia. The logo in the site, Wikipedia has rather an earth like image with a character that piques to the alphabet "W". Now this "W" is a representation from several language and this has taken a beating from two languages - Japanese and Sanskrit.

The symbolism is not exactly ideal. Those on the lookout for errors at Wikipedia have flagged a few more — this time, however, they are not examples of vandalism at the user-created site but typographical errors in Wikipedia’s own logo. A globelike jigsaw puzzle with characters from various languages on the pieces. Two of the characters — one in Japanese and one in Devanagari, the script used in Sanskrit and several modern Indian languages — are meaningless because of minor slips.

The founder could easily cool his heels by saying "The nature of Wikipedia is such that because it is written by everyone, there are errors,”. Also, the logo, showing an incomplete jigsaw puzzle, Wikipedia was, “as far as I know, the only website whose logo is a disclaimer (‘This website is a work in progress.’)”

It seemed like they tried to pick characters that were from a wide range of languages (including Klingon in the far upper right) that looked interesting and generally represented a W sound. The Devanagari error was caused by a computer glitch, he said, which swapped the order of two parts of the character; the Japanese error was simply carelessness. Though the errors have been discussed among cognoscenti for more than two years, they have not been fixed, mainly because Friedland says he lost the original computer file and is too busy to start from scratch. “I can’t find the settings I used to make it,” he said. “Three years ago I was unemployed, in my room all day, finishing my degree.”

Now a software developer for a Microsoft subsidiary, Tellme, Friedland said he had moved on and wanted to hand off responsibility. Call that the boss ! Now the portal is making big strides has ironically no captain to take it to the shore !

FYI - Blood donor club

A fellow blogger, Aditi, had written about an internet site where you can register when you are in dire need for any Blood group and you get some donor responding to you within 30 minutes. That is amazing.

Please do look at this site for more information -Need Blood?

Also, the main site, Indian Blood Donors, and I don't know the veracity of the information on how quick you get the blood and how the blood transmission procedures and environs are. But I am trying to be a good Samaritan in passing the information to some or anyone that may need it.

Thanks for reading it and please do pass on the information to all you might know- may not be a receiver, a prospective donor too can help the cause.

I did my part and registered myself, did you?

Interesting, rather Idiotic attempt for a job.

I chanced on a site and as I read an article which started off as a casual read became quite a serious one indeed. Visit this site "how-not-to-get-a-job". The guy has sheer audacity or was off mind to make a bigotry ruthful statement. I don't know where he was coming from. What knocked me off was what he said - "you only hire indians and pakistanis who don’t ask for a good salary. But dude, i am neither indian or paki and i have never worked for less than 2000 usd/month."

But this was a real shake up within my system on how much people hate Indians or rather how much our pride goes ashore before us. The point to note is a dimwit like Amir in the site, knows that Indians work cheap. Now, who would beat that statement. Not to say "Cheap" is the word but the fact is most of the corporations that leave the foreign shore and come to India to have their own shop set up never ever make a statement that they want an office of their own because Indians are hardworking [OR] a sizable population understand and speak English [OR] a good percent of the crowd knows what to do given a situation. Instead they market their moves differently. They say they want to come because it is "Cheap". Now a common person, regardless of being in a developed country or any part of the world, if he keeps hearing and reading the word "Cheap", then without an effort, he is going to mark the brown skinned person working in India is a "Cheap Labor". And to say Chase, Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, BofA yada yada have their own offices here and cheap labor is not the only reason they are here. The market realization in South Asia is like never before and 1001 times ahead of any other country in the world.

If a corporation has to make a mark to survive, it HAS to have an operation in India. or maybe near shore. Period. End of story. That is the only sane move. But to flag the move by classifying people around as "Cheap" turns me off so much. The country cannot be blamed for that. The varying USD to Indian Rupee or UK PS to Indian Rupee or Euro to Indian Rupee is the reason for their move. And the motive should not be messed up with the labor arbitrage or the cost involved for that.

Now, the damage is already done and the classification goes beyond shores now. The writings are bold and carved wonderfully that people are going to continue to vent their feelings and thoughts by calling Indians - Cheap. Perhaps couple of generations later things might change for good. Who knows? But for records, I hate being called a Cheap Laborer any day.

Differing Thoughts.

I was reading, The Economist - At a glance post, and they put up an usual graph as they do always, but this time around, the stats sorta caught my eyes. It goes about something like "Differing Thoughts", which mainly is pertinent to the Muslim community on how they feel. The stats was based on the developed countries, mostly the Europe and North American belt. No Asia. That is besides the point.

OF FIVE Western countries polled by the Pew Research Centre, Muslims in Britain were the most likely to identify themselves by religion rather than nationality. A massive 81% considered themselves Muslim first. This was higher than in Spain or America, two other countries in which terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists have been carried out. Indeed, in America, only 47% of Muslims thought of themselves in this way, marginally more than in France. Perhaps a shared background of revolution, a written constitution and promotion of national values explains the similarities between responses in France and America: 62% of Muslims in both countries thought life was better for women there than in Muslim countries. By contrast, a mere 46% of Spanish Muslims agreed.

If they had brought in India into the equation, I wonder how many of those Muslims would have thought of themselves as Indians first as compared to Muslim would have been an interesting find. I, for one, think most of the Muslims in India blatantly support the Muslim world rather than the place where they are surviving. I am not saying all are like this. The fact is the percentage of people who feel they are Indians first would be extremely less. I don't have to remind anyone about Kargil War. I was in Hyderabad then. And the fantastic thing that happened there in this Muslim community was that they living in India, were forming "human chain" voicing concerns for their "brothers" in Pakistan. I was like what is this community made of? They live in India, enjoy the riches and yet fall out when it comes to supporting them. If this was one, they want a Muslim Bank now which gives no zero percent interest to Muslims and keep in mind, the Muslims alone can transact in this bank. The RBI thrashed out this suggestion. And it was this community who said they will not respect the National Anthem no more coz there is no mention of their community. I was like .. Hello.. you had no place to go when you had you backs slapped. So shut up and be grateful that you are able to live in a place which is extremely calm to what your community has been doing to all countries around. And, if this was not enough, the make a big deal about Knighting Rushdie ! Reason, he wrote 'Santanic Verses'.

Anyway, the longer I talk, the more dirty facts I would put up on the blog which is not what I want. The point being how much people put nationality below the regional feeling. It is a shame come to think of it.

My Personal Day of Death is...

Well then a random site has made a prediction and when it comes to the last day till when I would be alive. Strange eh? Check this out - the site called Death Clock is somehow quite sure that my personal day of death is Saturday, March 28, 2071 !

Wow! that is longer than I thought. Anyway I will take it ... 2071 is quite far. Man, what do I do living that long. Hmm... In that high note for all the girls around to take note of that number, I sign off.

Interesting saying....

"Smoke like a chimney, work like a horse, eat without thinking, sleep like a baby and go for a walk only in really pleasant company", Einstein said this very long ago. And that is how things are even now after so many years too. We need to have a good company to either pour our feelings or even to just talk to. What makes a good company and how do we know that? Is it someone who listens to us that makes that person the "pleasant company"? I, personally, think that is the way to go. Being a friday, choose a good company to chill out.

Another advertisement gimmick or truth !!

I read this article about a Black Google, which saves up power consumption blah blah. Not sure if it is true. But I as a user had a few problems accessing the site primarily because the site is all black and I cannot see the contents right.
Black Google is best explained in that site and I wonder if it would ever reach the mass or is it yet another marketing sham. I don't know. Let's see how people react to this "new" invention.

Google scanner !

I really wonder what it means being the owner of Google. One thing it strikes everyone at awe when it comes to their innovation and the other thing people or corporation bent on testing the stress levels by pushing and pulling the image for whatever reason. I think great corporations are those that are able to stand the ground regardless to the pressure. Come to think about Microsoft for a few moments, you would realise how much better off they were then. Now every tom dick and harry want to have a swipe at them and see if they stand the criticism. I remember one of the most sorted after person in the Europe who perpetrated against Microsoft in terms exposing the vulnerabilities was found out and recruited by Microsoft! Perhaps one way of knowing the enemy well would mean good for the corporations growth !!

Now without digressing, and leaving some space to talk about Microsoft glories later some other day, Google's positives were that of bringing innovation. Now that does not mean bringing in new softwares support products alone. It also means how much you make Google a self sufficient system that would make the User to look within the system for any details. I still remember the days when Yahoo and Hotmail were vying with each other in terms of amassing the user population with trifle new operations and yada yada. Google was the no one anywhere types then. It came in with a bang and gave an option of 2 gigs of server space which blew the imagination off the competitors and the users. That is some innovation and as always it comes with a price. There are so many products that Google has managed to create - organic and non organic ways. You Tube acquisition cannot go untold and Orkut - a networking community cannot go unmentioned either.

Off all the positives, there have been a few flip side, funny events too when it comes to Google. The infamous one of them all is the Google Bombs. These are something that the user community did for their political aggrandizement. For instance, when Kerry and Bush were steep contenders for the presidential elections, Google bombs like "Miserable Failure" and "Waffles" in Google search were attributed and linked to Bush's and Kerry's official websites ! That was the first time the Google was on the defense to find means and stop the Google bombs. Quite an interesting set of bloggers joined and formed the Google Bomber's site. Also, just for you insatiable interest to know if there are any more Google Bombs left click on the link Google Bombs.

If this was one story line on political defamation, Google attack seems to be a pleasure indeed. The rate at which people keep trying to catch Google pants down is mind blowing. For instance look at this. I got a mail forward one day about a folly on Google Maps particularly UK. Really funny to see a mistake like this that too when it is meant to show the direction. I spun my head and laughed like nuts.

If this was not enough, my fellow Blogger, Kartic, seems to have truly caught Google naked and seems to be slapping the naked butt hard ! He had coincidentally written about a Google Folly, pretty much when I wrote this ! Call it coincidence or was it an event with intention ! I don't know. This time around the butt of ridicule is the technology used in Orkut. Again I don't blame him. He is from Japan and people in Japan,I am told, can be hearless and merciless when see a mistake like this. But hey, it was another fun point.

But whatever, said and done. It is always fun to make a discovery like this and circulate it around to those that still have a funny bone in them. However, to do this mockery on a technology or for that matter anything as great thing to human community such as Google, as a full time event is not an appropriate thing I feel. Said and done, they are trying .. I think.

Why me !

Ever wonder what it is like when the people you had 'hidden passion' on is no longer single but you are? Damn the feeling ! Worst is'nt it. Yea that happened today. My friend in another department of specialization came to learn I was in India and traced my number out and this person I spoke to was a good 6 years back when I was in College * Blush *.

The moment the name was said I am pretty sure it would have been a mutual reaction but we did not speak for long time. Then silence and struggle for words and breath. So questions on what was conquered and achieved all along and a few other mundane questions to follow it. Then the news,"Hey Vik, know something I got married and it is a year now". BURST ! Sob sob. Then we hang up the phone. Question is why me? And as this happens, the clock cries out and I wake up sweating and panting. AH! The dream... Damn you.

What are great men made of?

Ever wonder who great men are? Well start from fictional characters viz a viz Spidey, Superman, Batman yada yada were never claimed to be "great" men. They were rescuing and saving the men in distress alright but still men did not classify these fictional characters great. Now lets shift focus to sports person for instance, we don't call them all great either. We call them amazing or awesome people mainly because of the talent and media attention. And many more people in several fields of excellence ain't so easily called "great". So who are these great men then? When can a person be called a great person rather who calls the shots in naming a mortal great?

To answer that question, great men are you and me. No it ain't a joke. Great men are us all and when we know how to respect human beings and when we don't let the success start ruling us. It might sound a bit vague and for starters a bit of a sarcastic joke. Fact is we can all be great men if we keep all our feet really stuck hard in the ground and yet savor the condition of being an achiever.

I will give a live instance of two set of people that would sum up the content I am trying to advocate. I chanced upon a Senior Manager Sekar who works for Merrill Lynch. What a guy? He has worked almost every other part of the world. Extremely result oriented and fantastic person. I think these guys have nothing to prove anymore to anyone, given their experience with success. Imagine a condition when you are the only one Indian in the entire American operation who holds a senior management position. Fantastic. The reason why a senior manager position is sorta an apple to the eye primarily when abroad is because unlike in Developing environment, for example India, you don't get to move on to a higher position in short frame like 2 years or meeting a budget of 10-15 million! This gentleman has about 30 years of experience and when you meet him for the first time you could see the nice warm smile that does take a common by surprise. The gentlemen has a ear for what you say and never tries to ridicule the achievement that you claim is your success. This is one type of a person. Now to another one and I would not name the person for obvious reason. The guy has about 12 years of experience works in a service industry and nothing significant about him indeed primarily because he treats people with scant respect. I remember a day about 4 years ago , when we were executing a very difficult project, a guy about 6 years experience answered his question with a degree of skepticism and the guy goes ballistic. In front of everyone. Unparliamentary words. Fresh associates out of colleges stood watching the verbal abuse and I just don't want to imagine and think about the guy who got a good bit of his mind. Now he holds the position and has the money to back it. But I don't think he is quite respected at heart by his peers. Heck ! I don't think he even cares about it.

You can now know where I am coming to.

I think with greater position comes greater responsibility and one of the most important thing being the people management and knowing where you were from. The great minds in several fields of accomplishment are not the ones who had no control on their actions. Rather it is the set of people who primarily knew what "Human Beings" around them were. The people who know how to respect fellow human beings are definitely are on the path of not only success but also are on the threshold of becoming great men. This according to me is the only thing that we have to do should we have to be successful in life in true sense. We all have had moments for being sarcastic when it comes to admonishing fellow humans. Atleast I did many years back. I accept it I was brash but heck who has not done that. Now is the time we shake the qualities out of us and become sane at heart. That is the only small step that would differentiate a successful person from a great and successful person. Who you want to be your prerogative. Hey, it is a free world indeed :-)

Until then.

Democracy or Demoilism(Democracy + Communilism)

The word Democracy derives from the classical Greek demokratia, formed from the roots "Demo" the mob, the many and "Kratos" rule. According to Wikipedia, there are so many forms of democracy and what they are in terms of the society where we live.

Likewise, the word communilism is an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. (According to Wikipedia). There were many successful and renowned leaders in their fields of interest who were quite famous and advocated Communism. China prospered immensely being a communist state.

Although the existence of each sort of ruling formula has it's own flip side. We all know how the ninth largest city in the world, Shangai in China came into being. How it was before and now is totally astounding and just goes to show the success of a communist state. If this was a success story, the failure of communism is best answered in the link. In turn, India practices Democracy and I think this society is something that is quite pulling the growth of the people and the country herself. Almost half a century has elapsed now that India practiced democracy. It is widely claimed that the practice of democratic system in India is a success. Superficially the claim seems sound since parliamentary government is at no time interrupted from its inception. But it is closer to objectivity when things are viewed from their practical perspectives and one prefers it. Has India become a failed state? Answer is Yes and a No.

After being spoon fed by the information I have gathered from the Internet, I think with the
heavy population and their growing demands PLUS the growth of the country on it's own needs a small re-definition of Democracy. There should be a need to have a basis on who rules the country, an independent council monitoring the finance books, a Council that provides quicker solution to any problem faced by the common man and many more. There is a group or a body that does it now in the present world but it takes it's own course. A rape case takes 2 years for a ruling, a hit and run civil case takes 4-5 years regardless of the stay orders. And what I am talking about is just a small percentage of many more long standing cases. This cannot be the solutions for the increasing growth. For instance, the idea to clear the 10 Billion Dollars land, Asia's biggest slum - Dharavi, to a residential apartment model is never to get off it's bottom in a Democractic society. I bet my bottom dollar on this. So many parties would get involved and so many money laundering acts and then we would be where we started after 5 years !

I think, Demoilism(Democracy + Communilism), should come into foray soon. Be communistic when needed and be Democractic when needed. I am not sure this would be much appreciated by all. But to win some you have to lose some. Beggars did come into existence because of lack of food. They came into existence because they thought this was an easy way to make a living. Occupying someone's land to make a business came into being because that again was an easy business. These entities are not needed in a society. They are leeches and are an impediment to the forward moving society.

Some one made a remark, "India's development in the current situation is despite the Government and Development in China is because of the Government". How we want to live is based on the decisions we enforce. A tablet may be bitter or sour or whatever, but the after effect makes us a happy camper.

I just hope Demoilism would soon be a reality. I hope......

Walking ways to good health

I am not advocating for anything here. I am not forced to think about a routine here so that my health would be in good shape. Of all the forms of cardio exercises, walking they tell is the best of all.

An inspirational speech by Infosys Founder Mr Narayana Moorthy.

N R Narayana Murthy, chief mentor and chairman of the board, Infosys Technologies, delivered a pre-commencement lecture at the New York University ( Stern School of Business) on May 9. It is a scintillating speech, Murthy speaks about the lessons he learnt from his life and career.

Dean Cooley, faculty, staff, distinguished guests, and, most importantly, the graduating class of 2007, it is a great privilege to speak at your commencement ceremonies.
I thank Dean Cooley and Prof Marti Subrahmanyam for their kind invitation. I am exhilarated to be part of such a joyous occasion. Congratulations to you, the class of 2007, on completing an important milestone in your life journey.
After some thought, I have decided to share with you some of my life lessons. I learned these lessons in the context of my early career struggles, a life lived under the influence of sometimes unplanned events which were the crucibles that tempered my character and reshaped my future.
I would like first to share some of these key life events with you, in the hope that these may help you understand my struggles and how chance events and unplanned encounters with influential persons shaped my life and career.
Later, I will share the deeper life lessons that I have learned. My sincere hope is that this sharing will help you see your own trials and tribulations for the hidden blessings they can be.
The first event occurred when I was a graduate student in Control Theory at IIT, Kanpur , in India . At breakfast on a bright Sunday morning in 1968, I had a chance encounter with a famous computer scientist on sabbatical from a well-known US university.
He was discussing exciting new developments in the field of computer science with a large group of students and how such developments would alter our future. He was articulate, passionate and quite convincing. I was hooked. I went straight from breakfast to the library, read four or five papers he had suggested, and left the library determined to study computer science.
Friends, when I look back today at that pivotal meeting, I marvel at how one role model can alter for the better the future of a young student. This experience taught me that valuable advice can sometimes come from an unexpected source, and chance events can sometimes open new doors.
The next event that left an indelible mark on me occurred in 1974. The location: Nis , a border town between former Yugoslavia , now Serbia , and Bulgaria . I was hitchhiking from Paris back to Mysore , India , my home town.
By the time a kind driver dropped me at Nis railway station at 9 p.m. on a Saturday night, the restaurant was closed. So was the bank the next morning, and I could not eat because I had no local money. I slept on the railway platform until 8.30 pm in the night when the Sofia Express pulled in.
The only passengers in my compartment were a girl and a boy. I struck a conversation in French with the young girl. She talked about the travails of living in an iron curtain country, until we were roughly interrupted by some policemen who, I later gathered, were summoned by the young man who thought we were criticising the communist government of Bulgaria .
The girl was led away; my backpack and sleeping bag were confiscated. I was dragged along the platform into a small 8x8 foot room with a cold stone floor and a hole in one corner by way of toilet facilities. I was held in that bitterly cold room without food or water for over 72 hours.
I had lost all hope of ever seeing the outside world again, when the door opened. I was again dragged out unceremoniously, locked up in the guard's compartment on a departing freight train and told that I would be released 20 hours later upon reaching Istanbul . The guard's final words still ring in my ears -- "You are from a friendly country called India and that is why we are letting you go!"
The journey to Istanbul was lonely, and I was starving. This long, lonely, cold journey forced me to deeply rethink my convictions about Communism. Early on a dark Thursday morning, after being hungry for 108 hours, I was purged of any last vestiges of affinity for the Left.
I concluded that entrepreneurship, resulting in large-scale job creation, was the only viable mechanism for eradicating poverty in societies.
Deep in my heart, I always thank the Bulgarian guards for transforming me from a confused Leftist into a determined, compassionate capitalist! Inevitably, this sequence of events led to the eventual founding of Infosys in 1981.
While these first two events were rather fortuitous, the next two, both concerning the Infosys journey, were more planned and profoundly influenced my career trajectory.
On a chilly Saturday morning in winter 1990, five of the seven founders of Infosys met in our small office in a leafy Bangalore suburb. The decision at hand was the possible sale of Infosys for the enticing sum of $1 million. After nine years of toil in the then business-unfriendly India , we were quite happy at the prospect of seeing at least some money.
I let my younger colleagues talk about their future plans. Discussions about the travails of our journey thus far and our future challenges went on for about four hours. I had not yet spoken a word.
Finally, it was my turn. I spoke about our journey from a small Mumbai apartment in 1981 that had been beset with many challenges, but also of how I believed we were at the darkest hour before the dawn. I then took an audacious step. If they were all bent upon selling the company, I said, I would buy out all my colleagues, though I did not have a cent in my pocket.
There was a stunned silence in the room. My colleagues wondered aloud about my foolhardiness. But I remained silent. However, after an hour of my arguments, my colleagues changed their minds to my way of thinking. I urged them that if we wanted to create a great company, we should be optimistic and confident. They have more than lived up to their promise of that day.
In the seventeen years since that day, Infosys has grown to revenues in excess of $3.0 billion, a net income of more than $800 million and a market capitalisation of more than $28 billion, 28,000 times richer than the offer of $1 million on that day.
In the process, Infosys has created more than 70,000 well-paying jobs, 2,000-plus dollar-millionaires and 20,000-plus rupee millionaires.
A final story: On a hot summer morning in 1995, a Fortune-10 corporation had sequestered all their Indian software vendors, including Infosys, in different rooms at the Taj Residency hotel in Bangalore so that the vendors could not communicate with one another. This customer's propensity for tough negotiations was well-known. Our team was very nervous.
First of all, with revenues of only around $5 million, we were minnows compared to the customer.
Second, this customer contributed fully 25% of our revenues. The loss of this business would potentially devastate our recently-listed company.
Third, the customer's negotiation style was very aggressive. The customer team would go from room to room, get the best terms out of each vendor and then pit one vendor against the other. This went on for several rounds. Our various arguments why a fair price -- one that allowed us to invest in good people, R&D, infrastructure, technology and training -- was actually in their interest failed to cut any ice with the customer.
By 5 p.m. on the last day, we had to make a decision right on the spot whether to accept the customer's terms or to walk out.
All eyes were on me as I mulled over the decision. I closed my eyes, and reflected upon our journey until then. Through many a tough call, we had always thought about the long-term interests of Infosys. I communicated clearly to the customer team that we could not accept their terms, since it could well lead us to letting them down later. But I promised a smooth, professional transition to a vendor of customer's choice.
This was a turning point for Infosys.
Subsequently, we created a Risk Mitigation Council which ensured that we would never again depend too much on any one client, technology, country, application area or key employee. The crisis was a blessing in disguise. Today, Infosys has a sound de-risking strategy that has stabilised its revenues and profits.
I want to share with you, next, the life lessons these events have taught me.
1. I will begin with the importance of learning from experience. It is less important, I believe, where you start. It is more important how and what you learn. If the quality of the learning is high, the development gradient is steep, and, given time, you can find yourself in a previously unattainable place. I believe the Infosys story is living proof of this.
Learning from experience, however, can be complicated. It can be much more difficult to learn from success than from failure. If we fail, we think carefully about the precise cause. Success can indiscriminately reinforce all our prior actions.
2. A second theme concerns the power of chance events. As I think across a wide variety of settings in my life, I am struck by the incredible role played by the interplay of chance events with intentional choices. While the turning points themselves are indeed often fortuitous, how we respond to them is anything but so. It is this very quality of how we respond systematically to chance events that is crucial.
3. Of course, the mindset one works with is also quite critical. As recent work by the psychologist, Carol Dweck, has shown, it matters greatly whether one believes in ability as inherent or that it can be developed. Put simply, the former view, a fixed mindset, creates a tendency to avoid challenges, to ignore useful negative feedback and leads such people to plateau early and not achieve their full potential.
The latter view, a growth mindset, leads to a tendency to embrace challenges, to learn from criticism and such people reach ever higher levels of achievement (Krakovsky, 2007: page 48).
4. The fourth theme is a cornerstone of the Indian spiritual tradition: self-knowledge. Indeed, the highest form of knowledge, it is said, is self-knowledge. I believe this greater awareness and knowledge of oneself is what ultimately helps develop a more grounded belief in oneself, courage, determination, and, above all, humility, all qualities which enable one to wear one's success with dignity and grace.
Based on my life experiences, I can assert that it is this belief in learning from experience, a growth mindset, the power of chance events, and self-reflection that have helped me grow to the present.
Back in the 1960s, the odds of my being in front of you today would have been zero. Yet here I stand before you! With every successive step, the odds kept changing in my favour, and it is these life lessons that made all the difference.
My young friends, I would like to end with some words of advice. Do you believe that your future is pre-ordained, and is already set? Or, do you believe that your future is yet to be written and that it will depend upon the sometimes fortuitous events?
Do you believe that these events can provide turning points to which you will respond with your energy and enthusiasm? Do you believe that you will learn from these events and that you will reflect on your setbacks? Do you believe that you will examine your successes with even greater care?
I hope you believe that the future will be shaped by several turning points with great learning opportunities. In fact, this is the path I have walked to much advantage.
A final word: When, one day, you have made your mark on the world, remember that, in the ultimate analysis, we are all mere temporary custodians of the wealth we generate, whether it be financial, intellectual, or emotional. The best use of all your wealth is to share it with those less fortunate.
I believe that we have all at some time eaten the fruit from trees that we did not plant. In the fullness of time, when it is our turn to give, it behooves us in turn to plant gardens that we may never eat the fruit of, which will largely benefit generations to come. I believe this is our sacred responsibility, one that I hope you will shoulder in time.
Thank you for your patience. Go forth and embrace your future with open arms, and pursue enthusiastically your own life journey of discovery!

Funny Resignation post Employee vs Manager

The name is good, the brand is big
But the work I do is that of a pig
The work or the brand; what is my way?
I don’t know if I should stay.

To work, they have set their own way
Nobody will care to hear what I say
My will be NULL, they wont change their way
I don’t know if I should stay.

The project is in a critical stage
But to do good work, this is the age
This dilemma is killing me day by day
I don’t know if I should stay.

The money is good, the place is great
But the development is at a very small rate
Should I go for the work, or wait for pay
I don’t know if I should stay!

The managers don’t know what they talk
The team doesn’t know where they walk
That’s a bad situation, what say?
I don’t know if I should stay.
I can go to any other place
But what if I get the same disgrace
I can’t keep switching day by day
I don’t know if I should stay.

The -ves are more, the +ves are less
Then why have this unnecessary mess
No more will I walk their way,
It’s all done, I won’t stay.

Thanks & Regards
Employee

Manager Response

Reply: What I want to say? (Manager)

The decision is good or decision is bad
Only God knows still I am glad
Keep moving in life that is what I can say

If you feel right go in the same way
May god give you the work, the challenge you want
Anyway there is always a second chance
Chances are there, grab them snatch them
That is what I can say Keep on jumping companies to get more and more and more….
That will keep you always a fore (Even to me)
From my experience I can tell you
Working here is like taking hell out of you
You are frustrated since you have no quality work
And you were frustrated because you had quantity work

It’s always like that previous job was better than the current one
And expects the new job will be much better than this one
But what you get is a frustration level up to sun
Than you will again send the resignation like this one
This is all what I want to say Have you completed all the formalities?
Filled the form and got it signed from dept. humanities (HR)
Once done you can take all your cash
But don’t refer others as they will follow you’re a*s.
At last I appreciate your contribution to the company
Even though there was not any….

You will keep a copy of this with you for FYI
Don’t feel shy
As I also got it some time back from my old manger say Hi….
That is all what I want to say.

Thanks & Regards
Manager

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand

The reason why I like her is because of her thoughts. Read the excerpts in the link below. Her view is the slap on the face types. Nakedly frank and nothing but brutal truth.

Don't flaunt riches - Prime Minister is watching ya.

I was reading a preposterous claim (probably best coupled as a best election stunt) by none other than the premier of India. The discussion purely started as a chance to best relive a few election spots which they once used to win comfortably. He says,”Lavish spending”, “Parties”, “Extravagant wedding” etc are “socially undesirable” and “environmentally unsustainable”. He further says “An area of great concern is the level of ostentatious expenditure on weddings and other family events. Such vulgarity insults the poverty of the less privileged, it is socially wasteful and it plants seeds of resentment in the minds of the have-nots. “

I think differently. I think the premier just forgot what democracy is and perhaps got a bit carried away towards dictatorship. I think firstly, no one has any right what so ever, don’t matter who you are and what you have done thus far, to decide how a person has to live and what is acceptable and what is not. This is one reason why India still remains backward in attitude because of all the “ungiven” right to comment on other person’s life style.

For records, India got 87,000 + crores as Tax returns alone last year. I am not including any other funds that they would have mobilized. Is this money not a small subset for instilling the “have nots” a sense of being part of the country? Should’nt it become the obligation of the ruling government to do something for the “have nots”. I am not against giving it back to the society. That is the only way you can say you care. I do that and every one does that from their best ability. People contribute to old age homes, people do give finances for animal care and what not. But my serious point is since when the government gets the right to say what a person can do and what they should’nt it even when it is legally and ethically bounded action.

The main problem with India at this juncture is – Population, great belief on the concept called “Free Food”, right to question other person’s life. What psyches me off big time is the fact that the so called growing billionaires club in India – 36 of them, they found their success because of sheer hard work. They found ways to proliferate their corporation’s growth through their own methods despite the government’s help. And yet when they hit the peak and they spend time “celebrating” their success, we have the audacity to say “Hey think about the poor”. Would we do that when every other guy celebrate their success around us? It is their god damn money and I am pretty sure they would have had to spend many a sleepless nights, stress and now when they want to hit off, we got a problem. So lame I think this.

The main concept I would like to vent out through this medium is that according to the NSO, there are about 22.15% of people living in poverty. What has the government done to alleviate this living standard? The poverty factor did not show up suddenly. It was very much here for a very long time since the India became sovereign and secular. We have labored through all this since then and the growth has happened between all this. Now my point, it is only here in India, a physically well to do man would take to begging and take to the concept of “free food” as his birth right. I say, “Nothing called free food exists now; it was once in the Dino era when T-Rex got its due”. Beggars just need to ask and they get free food. Stop that option, and then you will see the guy work for his food. The so called “celebrated spenders” worked their way for their food. Then why did we get so concerned they should not live their life.

And obviously let's not talk about the reservations for the castes around. I would end up making a living by writing pages against it !

At the end, I firmly think we should have to right to live and see how you want to live your life. We should give it back to the society, which will happen automatically as you grow up the career ladder. But to have a meter checking whether they “successful” people are living an extravagant life or not is NONE of our business or for that matter no one’s business.
